CHAPTER 40

We tripled our speed, but refused to drop our baskets. Faced with war, the last thing we needed was a lack of provisions. Not that our meager offering would feed everyone for more than an evening, but it was better than nothing.

RAH!

The village was bustling with activity when we rushed in. All evening fires had been put out before the sun fully waned. Nobody wanted our enemies to see beacons of light as guideposts for where to attack.

They knew our position from previous battles, even though we always did our best to change the forest to remove common landmarks between wars.

“You have returned just in time,” said Endro, one of the Ashen who had left his tribe many years ago. He wasn’t like them, except in appearance. “I fear we will need every able-bodied warrior to defend ourselves against this invasion.”

All the Ashen were tall and lean, with powder-white skin and bright blue eyes. They had sharpened teeth and long claws pointing out from hands that dangled off their overly large arms. Even standing upright, the tips of an Ashen’s fingers nearly reached down to their knees.

From what I understood, Endro was able to sense the numbers of his people whenever they were warring.

Charon stepped into our midst, wearing his full armor and looking ready to fight. He was our most decorated warrior, having run our campaigns over the last thirty seasons. We all bowed our heads in reverence to him.

RAH!

“Our scouts have sent back word the Ashen are sending a large raiding party,” he said, his voice calm.

“I believe there to be nearly one hundred warriors on the way,” Endro replied.

Charon nodded his agreement. “Isabel is at the front, sending back information as quickly as possible.”

She was the only one capable of connecting with the village oracle.

I glanced past them and found the Oracle seated in the center of the compound. Her given name was Claire, but nobody dared call her that. In our village, she was known respectfully as the Oracle. She was floating just above the ground, and there was a ring of dim green light circling her head like some kind of magical crown. Nobody understood precisely what she was capable of, other than her ability to communicate over long distances with another who was sensitive to the motions of reality.

“Drop off your baskets and prepare yourselves,” Charon commanded. “We must do our best to keep the Ashen from entering the compound.”

RAH!

Marjory, Joseph, and I rushed toward the armory, stopping only briefly to hand our catch of the day to the cook. He didn’t seem all that interested in preparing food, but he thanked us accordingly.

As I ran by the Oracle, she opened her eyes and looked directly at me.

I froze instantly, unable to move.

You saw the wolf again?

Yes.

She knows who you are, and yet, it appears we do not.

What did that mean? How did they not know who I was? I’d lived in this village all my life!

She continued her gaze. I sense you will play a pivotal role, Graven, as will the wolf.
